On July 2, Human Asia hosted the orientation session for the 2019 6th International Model UN Human Rights Council Universal Periodic Review at Seoul NPO Center. The 2019 I-Model UN UPR is Korea’s first unique MUN academic simulation of the UN’s UPR system. The I-Model UN UPR seeks to explore present understandings of and potential solutions to human rights issues within South Korea, China, Japan and North Korea. It then attempts to forward regional efforts towards peace and cooperation regarding these issues, through the utilisation of the UN human rights protection system.
The event has been held annually since 2013 for domestic undergraduate and postgraduate students. From 2018 onward, the event expanded to become an international conference, for residents in Japan and Hong Kong. As the orientation was held in Seoul, only participants from or residing in Korea took part, with the session detailing the event’s rules and procedures being recorded for the participants in Hong Kong or Japan. Participants from Hong Kong City University, International Christian University (Japan), and Seinan Gakuin University will undertake a separate orientation session in their own countries sometime in July.
The orientation concluded successfully thanks to the active participation and interest of participating Korean and international students. The main event will be held between 12 August – 13 August at Korea University. We welcome all those with an interest in the UPR, the UN and its human rights protection mechanisms to come and observe this year’s finalists take part in the 2019 6th I-Model UN UPR event.
